(N3) Applying Tools of the Trade for VAD Assessment, Insertion and Post-insertion Evaluation

This presentation aims to explore the available tools and applications for use during the initial assessment, insertion, and post-insertional evaluation of vascular access devices.

Within the last two decades, we have experienced an explosion of new technologies, tools, and supplies designed to improve outcomes and successful insertions with intravenous and intra-arterial devices. Visualization technologies have opened our eyes and expanded our ability to truly “see” inside a patient’s arm to identify veins and arteries most appropriate for catheter placement. Certain tools, such as near-infrared, speed up the vein selection process. Other ultrasound devices assist with difficult access to patients and needle guidance. Through education and experience, inserters have become more and more adept at placing catheters on the first attempt reinforcing the principles of vessel health and preservation. This presentation will highlight current visualization tools, options, and applications for vein assessment and needle-guided insertions, and post-insertion evaluation while comparing the features and applications of each. Integration of these tools and options provides more effective methods to apply vessel health and preservation while promoting greater patient safety.
