The aim of our study is to evaluate the effectiveness of structured self-evaluation of video recorded performance as a teaching and assessment tool. This randomised control trial included nursing students who were randomised into two groups. The experimental group self-evaluated their PIVC insertion simulated performance whereas the control group did not self-evaluate their simulated performance. Both groups received extra simulated practice sessions on PIVC insertion and all practice sessions were video recorded. We evaluated students’ PIVC knowledge, their confidence and their simulated performance alongside the success of their attempts in performing the skill in clinical practice.
Learning Objectives:
Discuss the findings of the study and the use of the teaching and assessment approach for peripheral intravenous catheter insertion.
By the end of this session the participant will be able to describe the study data collection tools used to assess students knowledge, confidence and performance of the skill
Discuss future research considerations of this teaching and assessment strategy.
