The goal of this work was to develop an evidence-based consensus statement to highlight the need to embrace vein visualization technology to improve PIVV access. The objectives included: (i) synthesizing prior evidence and recommendations for PIVC access and care (e.g., AVA position statement, INS standards of practice); (ii) adding some further considerations relevant to a post-pandemic / endemic era including recognition of the potential benefits of adopting vein visualization technologies, and (iii) ensuring health service users are given a voice in the process by including public and patient representatives in the development process. Inclusion of patients in research and development of clinical recommendations is crucial to providing person-centered care and improving outcomes. Yet, the patient voice is almost entirely absent from PIVC research and clinical recommendations. This work seeks to change that and is the first PIVC consensus statement developed with patient engagement and input.
Learning Objectives:
Discuss prior evidence and recommendations for PIVC access and care.
Describe considerations relevant to a post-pandemic / endemic era including recognition of the benefits of vein visualization technologies
Understand the importance of including patients and public representatives in research and other scholarly work
