This session will discuss the findings of a quality improvement study conducted at UC San Diego Health concerning PVC-BSI risk compared to CLABSI. Attendees will learn how NHSN definitions for CLABSI were applied to PVCs to create a case definition and subsequently the types of pathogens responsible in these cases. Furthermore, attendees will learn the importance of a PVC-BSI surveillance program and how one can be initiated in an EMR-based system.

Learning Objectives:

  • By the end of this session, the participant will be able to describe the risks of PVC-BSI compared to CLABSI.
  • Learn how to develop a PVC-BSI active surveillance program using EMRs.
  • By the end of this session, the participant will be able to implement best practices to prevent PVC-BSI.
