Infusion therapy practice is critical to positive patient outcomes in all healthcare settings. The 2021 INS Infusion Therapy Standards of Practice encompasses evidence-based practice in competency, device management, infusate administration, documentation, quality improvement, and patient advocacy in mitigating infusion-related adverse events. The Standards are used globally in settings from home care to critical care and address best practice recommendations for infusates, devices, and routes of delivery. With the ever-expanding array of infusion-related research, INS transitioned from a 5-year to a 3-year review cycle with publication of the 9th edition in 2024. New methodology has been incorporated to improve the rigor of evidence review, including midline utilization, vasopressor administration, and infusion therapy in the home environment. This presentation will provide an overview of the scope and methodology used to revise the Standards, describe application of the Standards to inform clinical practice, and review current trends and priorities in infusion therapy research.
