Most clinicians have some idea of what the standard devices should be selected for various IV therapy needs. There are, however, not infrequent situations where there is conflict over device selection or the timing of placement of certain devices in complex patient situations. This presentation will give some case studies to illustrate where the differing perspectives or goals of care can be in conflict, to evaluate the guidelines that may drive their perspective, and discussion as to resolution of the conflict. Guidelines will be discussed to guide resolution or to show the lack of ability to give clear direction. Identifying and reaching out to clinical experts for their opinions will be discussed. Nearly every day at work (and I only work 2 to 3 - 12 hour days a week), a colleague or I encounter challenging clinical situations. We have the opportunity to discuss the details of these scenarios and are able to elicit a robust discussion or get opinions from other clinical experts. This presentation will invite participants to think about how they would approach such scenarios, who would they reach out to for critical and clinical evaluation for decision making of selected devices. It is intended to expand the attendees' critical thinking skills.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this session, the participant will be able to identify their own knowledge about the appropriateness and non-appropriateness of various vascular access devices.
By the end of this session, the participant will be able to identify the key elements in each case scenario that are critical to device selection and/or timing of placement.
By the end of this session, the participant will be able to discuss how they would approach each scenario and explain their reasoning to clinicians involved.
