This session is reporting the results of a randomized controlled trial of 1759 patients to compare integrated vs non-integrated PIVs in adult patients. The primary outcome was device failure (composite: occlusion, infiltration, phlebitis, dislodgement, local, or bloodstream infection). Infection endpoints were assessor‐masked. The secondary outcomes were: failure type, first‐time insertion success, tip colonization, insertion pain, dwell time, mortality, costs, health‐related quality of life, clinician, and patient satisfaction.

Learning Objectives:

Describe the difference between integrated and non-integrated PIVs and which patient groups these may be more suited to as well as the cost-benefit outcomes to consider.
Demonstrate understanding of the complex problem of PIV failure and the risk factors for this, as well as the role of integrated catheters in prevention of some complications.
Reflect on their own practice and opportunities to undertake or collaborate on research studies that provide an evidence base for the vascular access specialty.
