Vein visualization technologies that enhance venous assessment and improve PIV access are now widely available. Educating student nurses on the benefits of vein visualization technology and facilitating use in a simulated environment will enhance the learning experience and increase the knowledge and confidence of students, which can subsequently enhance clinical practice and patient outcomes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of an innovative, technology enhanced PIV teaching program on baccalaureate nursing students’ PIV knowledge and confidence, and attitude toward vein visualization technology. The study was conducted in an academic institution in the United States. A randomized, controlled study design was used. Educational content on vein visualization technology was integrated into a current PIV education program and data were collected using pre and post surveys. This session will discuss the study findings and recommendations.
Learning Objectives:
Summarize the evidence on PIV access and vein visualization technologies
Understand how to develop and implement a technology enhanced PIV education session for students
Discuss the main study findings and recommendations for future research and education
