(O3) General Session: Gettin' Sticky With It - Understanding How New PICC Materials Could Resist Blood Clotting and Benefit High Risk Patient Groups

This talk will describe the prevalence rates of PICC associated thrombosis and catheter failure. The talk will then introduce a variety of currently used PICC materials and explain how they are expected to influence blood component interaction and thrombus formation. We will then introduce blood components and discuss how they interact with different catheter materials - using some of our own data. Furthermore, we will describe new testing methods that can be used to accelerate the testing of next generation materials. Finally, will discuss some specific patient groups (oncology, infectious disease, obese) and how individuals' blood can predispose to thrombosis. This final point will reveal the potential of a personalised medicine approach, whereby laboratory PICC testing can be used to identify groups who may benefit most from next generation anti-thrombogenic PICC materials.

  • Define PICC associate thrombosis and identify the prevalence of PICC associated thrombosis in various patient groups.
  • Identify the main types of anti-thrombogenic materials (hydrophilic and hydrophobic) used within vascular access devices and generally describe how they function.
  • Recall what components of the blood bind to catheters and activate coagulation.
  • Describe how different catheter materials resist blood component binding, and therefore inhibit blood clot formation.
  • Describe why certain patient groups are at increased risk of PICC associated thrombosis and therefore, may benefit most greatly from anti-thrombogenic materials and devices.
