Inserters can encounter difficulty at many times during a VAD insertion, e.g., during venipuncture, guidewire and dilator insertion and removal, and passage of the catheter into the proper location. Frequently, there is no literature that describes the particular clinical situation. The inserter has to engage in critical thinking, on the spot, and/or call for help to salvage the difficult situation safely. This presentation is a video-based compilation of procedures that deviated from the routine course. The videos demonstrate the manner in which the difficulty presented and the technique that was employed to solve the problem. Specific situations include an implanted port that was stuck, veins that could not be dilated and relocation of malpositioned catheters, among others.
Learning Objectives:
Understand the importance of the haptic feedback to the inserter. Essentially, "feel is our fluoro."
Understand that non standard equipment may be required to solve the clinical problem.
List the different techniques that may be required to solve a clinical problem
