Peripheral IV catheters are one of the most commonly used medical devices. At Nationwide Children’s Hospital we place thousands of PIVs a year. Many of these devices do not last the entire duration of treatment, requiring the patients to undergo multiple IV placements. This is can be a negative event for patients and families. Longevity of PIV function has been studied in the adult population, yet little is known about the failure rate and reasons for failure in the pediatric population.

We assessed nearly 200,000 PIVs at our site to establish a baseline for pediatric peripheral IV failures using a survival analysis. We assessed site, gauge, and securement. We further delineated between Vascular Access Team placed IVs and those placed by other staff members. We hope to use this information to guide practice for our patients in the future and investigate the efficacy of securement devices in ongoing research.
