Every hospital has patients with a history of substance use. Few hospitals in the US have a policy to address this high risk population, so often clinical treatment decisions are made on a case by case basis. Should you place a PICC? Is it ethical to stick a patient daily for antibiotic treatment? Creating a plan and a policy can reduce clinician anxiety, legal and ethical concerns. There are tools, methods and practices that have proven successful for managing both inpatients and outpatients with a history of substance use. This interactive session will help you to craft a policy and practices for your facility to treat high-risk patients ethically and economically.
